Prep time

Cooking time

  • Dough
    500 grams flour

  • 1 packet instant yeast

  • 1 tea glass of oil

  • 1 glass of warm milk

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • Filling
150 grams butter (at room temperature)

  • Half a glass of granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

  • Put the flour into a large bowl. Open the centre like a pool and add yeast, oil, warm milk, salt and sugar. Knead the dough until you get a soft consistency that does not stick to your hands.
  • Cover the dough and leave it to ferment in a warm environment. Wait until the dough has doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  • Roll out the fermented dough on a floured surface into a rectangle with the help of a rolling pin.
  • For the filling, soften the butter at room temperature. Add granulated sugar and cinnamon and mix well.
  • Spread the buttered filling on the rolled out dough.
  • Roll the dough from the long side.
  • Cut the roll into two equal pieces with a knife. Cut both pieces in the middle to get four equal pieces.
  • Scratch each piece twice on both sides with the help of a fork to form a braid shape.
  • Place the prepared braided dough on the tray lined with greaseproof paper.
  • Bake in a preheated 180°C oven until golden brown (about 25-30 minutes).
  • Slice the buttered braid out of the oven while it is warm and serve.

  • Fresh Serving Suggestion: Serving the buttered braid fresh will maximise its flavour. The braid, which cools slightly after coming out of the oven, will be more delicious when served hot.
  • Types of Stuffing: Apart from the wonderful combination of cinnamon and butter, you may want to add personal touches to the recipe. For example, you can get unique flavours by adding walnuts, hazelnuts or dried fruits.
  • Proofing Time: It is important to allow enough time for the dough to double in size. This allows the dough to rise and air bubbles to form inside, so that the texture of the braid is lighter and fluffier.
  • Slicing Technique: It is important to use a sharp knife when slicing the buttered braid. When slicing, make sure that the dough does not fall apart, so you will get an aesthetic presentation.
  • Storage Conditions: If you can’t eat the whole braid on the same day, you can store the sliced pieces in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze them. Storage in the freezer is particularly suitable for long-term preservation.
  • These notes can help you to successfully complete your butter braid recipe and achieve a delicious result. Bon appetit!
