Cooking time

  • For Dough
    2.5 cups flour

  • 1 cup butter (cold and cut into cubes)

  • 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup ice water

  • For Sweet Potato Puree
3 medium sweet potatoes (boiled and mashed)

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 water glass of milk

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanillin (or vanilla extract)

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg

  • Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
  • For the dough, combine the flour and cold butter in a mixing bowl, crumbling with your fingers. Add the granulated sugar and process until the mixture has a sandy consistency. Add the ice water and knead the dough.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface and place it in the tart tin. Cut off the excess dough and smooth it out. Then let it rest in the refrigerator.
  • For the sweet potato mash, mash the boiled sweet potatoes. Add the other ingredients and mix well.
  • Pour the sweet potato mixture over the dough and smooth it.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the edges of the pie are golden brown and the centre is no longer shaking.
  • Allow the pie to cool and slice and serve.

  • The tart should be left to cool in the tart or cake tin for 15-20 minutes after coming out of the oven. This process will help the filling to harden better and the slicing process will become easier.
  • You can get clean and neat slices by using a sharp knife during the slicing process. Be careful when cutting the pie and gently place the slices on serving plates.
  • Serve each slice to family members or guests to enjoy with the wonderful flavour of the sweet potato.
  • Optionally, you can garnish each slice with a little fresh whipped cream, cinnamon or chopped walnuts.
  • The pie can be served at room temperature or chilled from the refrigerator. Some people prefer it slightly warm, while others may like it completely chilled.
  • You can store the leftover slices in the refrigerator to keep them fresh.
  • With this special recipe, get ready to enjoy grandma’s old-fashioned sweet potato pie recipe. Enjoy sharing nostalgic flavours!
