  • 1 pound (about 2 cups) piloncillo or dark brown sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

  • 1 cup chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans) (optional)


  • Prepare Ingredients:
  • If you are using piloncillo, break it into smaller pieces.
  • If you’re using dark brown sugar, measure it out.
  • Boil Piloncillo or Brown Sugar:
  • In a saucepan, combine the piloncillo or brown sugar with water.
  • Add a cinnamon stick if you like, for additional flavor.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes or until the mixture thickens slightly.
  • Add Flavor (Optional):
  • If you want to add extra flavor, stir in vanilla extract during the last few minutes of cooking.
  • Nuts (Optional):
